Disney confirmed Tuesday that Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel in its live-action version of Tangled, adding a major name to the cast of the upcoming remake. The announcement arrived through a playful social media reveal, with Hahn embracing the role of Rapunzel’s manipulative guardian.
The casting places Hahn alongside Teagan Croft, who is set to play Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim, who will appear as Flynn Rider. The film will rework the 2010 animated hit, which became one of Disney’s most popular modern fairy tale adaptations.
Mother Gothel was voiced in the original movie by Donna Murphy and remains one of the story’s most recognizable characters. She keeps Rapunzel hidden away in a tower while using the young woman’s magical hair to preserve her own youth.
The new version continues Disney’s long run of live-action remakes based on animated classics. With Hahn now officially on board, the project has filled one of its most closely watched roles as production moves forward.
