Kenya’s Catholic Church has launched a new altar wine brand after discovering the previous sacramental wine was being sold in local bars and liquor shops. “The newly approved wine is not for sale at any business outlet, but is imported and owned by the KCCB, and only distributed to the dioceses,” Archbishop of Nyeri Anthony Muheria told the BBC. The church selected a South African vintage after reviewing multiple options. Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba introduced the new wine Saturday, stating “This is the only wine that will be used in Mass celebrations across the country, going forward.” The old wine distributed by a local manufacturer had become widely available in secular outlets, concerning Catholic faithful who believed it lost its sanctity.
