A 60-year-old Missouri man was discovered dead at Sam’s Throne Campground in Arkansas Thursday following a suspected bear attack. The victim’s son requested a welfare check after not hearing from his father “for a couple days.” Deputies found the man’s disturbed campsite with evidence of struggle and drag marks leading into woods. The body was located “several yards” from the campsite with “extensive injuries consistent with those expected from a large carnivore attack,” according to Newton County Sheriff’s Office. The victim had sent family photos of a “young male bear” at his campsite two days earlier on September 30th. Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said “everything strongly indicates” a bear attack but awaits autopsy confirmation. “This is a highly unusual case,” Wheeler stated. The campground remains temporarily closed.
