Language-learning company Babbel and The Captioning Group released their annual list of most mispronounced words Thursday, featuring New York City’s incoming mayor Zohran Mamdani and Paris’s Louvre museum. Mamdani’s name, correctly pronounced zoh-RAHN mam-DAH-nee, was frequently mangled as he rose to political prominence. The Louvre made the list after October’s crown jewel theft sparked news coverage, with many incorrectly pronouncing the world’s most-visited museum’s name, which should be LOOV-ruh. Other challenging words included acetaminophen (uh-SEE-tuh-MIH-nuh-fen), Alex Murdaugh (AL-ick MUR-dock), and diabetes drug Mounjaro (mown-JAHR-OH). Babbel’s Esteban Touma noted many pronunciation challenges stem from adapting sounds from different languages. (Story URL)
