VIRGINIA, Minn. – Two bicyclists were rescued after falling down a cliff into a Minnesota iron range mine pit over the weekend.
The Virginia Fire Department was called to the Mesabi Bike Trail access point on Saturday afternoon where two males had fallen into the pit and were yelling for help.
One male was about 50 feet down, clinging to the cliff, and another male was about 100 feet down at water level with injuries. Firefighters used high-angle rescue techniques and rappelled down to the first male, who was able to be harnessed, secured, and climb out with the assistance of a rescuer.
Another rescuer then rappelled down to the second male, assessed and extricated by boat from out of the mine pit, and was transported to Essentia Health-Virginia.
