Three nuns in their 80’s secretly returned to their Austrian convent near Salzburg after being relocated to a care home against their will. Sisters Bernadette, Regina, and Rita were moved from Kloster Goldenstein in December 2023, despite promises they could stay for life. The women, assisted by former students and a locksmith, came back in early September to find their home without water, electricity, or their stairlift. Sister Rita said she feels “so happy and thankful” to be home. The convent was officially dissolved in January 2024 under oversight of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Provost Markus Grasl called their return “completely incomprehensible” and cited health concerns. Sister Bernadette declared: “Before I die in that old people’s home, I would rather go to a meadow and enter eternity that way.” Supporters now provide groceries and basic needs while utilities are being restored.
