The idea originated in 2012 when Zook decided to sell his last name as a unique marketing strategy. Subsequently, he sold his last name again for $50,000, becoming Jason SurfrApp. Despite the success, Zook decided to end the practice for more anonymity and adopted the permanent name Zook in honor of his great-grandfather.
