The City of Tulsa has hired a company, Cart Repo, to retrieve abandoned shopping carts from across the city. Since December, Cart Repo has collected 1,917 carts from 40 different stores, with the majority coming from Walmart. The city paid $100,000 for Cart Repo’s services, and the company then attempts to resell the collected carts back to the original retailers at a reduced price of $15 to $20 per cart, compared to the new cost of around $150. While Reasor’s grocery store has agreed to buy back some of the carts, other retailers have been reluctant, stating that the carts were stolen from them in the first place. This has resulted in the city losing money, as they are billed $15 per cart collected, but are not recouping the full cost. The city is now considering how to handle the carts that are not bought back, as metal carts can be recycled, but plastic carts will require alternative disposal methods. (NewsOn6)
