Man Mauled by Crocodile After Jumping Zoo Fence to Take Selfie With “Fake” Animal
A 29-year-old tourist learned the hard way that crocodiles at zoos are not props after he climbed into an enclosure at the Kabug Island Mangrove and Wetlands Park—only to be death rolled by a very real and very unimpressed croc named Lalay.
The man reportedly thought the crocodile was a plastic statue and hopped a chain-link fence with his phone in hand to snap a photo. Onlookers screamed in horror as the female crocodile clamped down on his arm, dragged him through shallow water, and performed a signature death roll, spinning him like a chew toy.
Despite being warned by staff beforehand, the tourist entered the enclosure anyway. It took a zookeeper smashing the croc with a piece of concrete to free him. He was rushed to a hospital and received more than 50 stitches for bites to his arm and leg.
Local police later said the man may be mentally impaired, and emphasized how lucky he was to survive the encounter. “This kind of behavior is very dangerous… He put other people’s lives at risk, and he is very lucky to have survived,” said Police Staff Sgt. Joel Sajolga. Officials are still investigating.
