Guy Sniffs His Own Dirty Socks Daily… Winds Up With a Lung Infection. Yes, Really.
Consider this your PSSA, Public Sniffing Service Announcement!
If you think your weird little habits are harmless… think again. A man in Chongqing, China had to be hospitalized after developing a fungal lung infection — and doctors say it was caused by his daily ritual of smelling his own dirty socks after work.
Yeah. Let that marinate.
The unnamed office worker was dealing with a nasty cough that wouldn’t go away, plus bloodshot eyes. After a series of scans, doctors found shadows in his lower lung, a sign of an Aspergillus infection, which is a common type of fungus.
So how did it get there? Well, turns out this guy had been taking big whiffs of his own sweat-soaked socks every day when he got home — before tossing them in the laundry.
Doctors were so baffled they even tested a pair of his socks. (Imagine that lab report…) And sure enough, full of fungal spores.
Apparently, sweaty socks provide the perfect breeding ground for all kinds of nasties: moisture, warmth, urea, salt… all the stuff fungus loves. And sniffing that right into your lungs? Doctors say sniffing your own socks “for fun” is a solid way to give yourself a one-way ticket to a respiratory nightmare.
