Great Salt Lake Officials Issue Unusual Reminder: Don’t Brine Your Turkey in the Lake
Every year, as Thanksgiving approaches, families across the country prepare for the feast — but one Utah resident took their preparation a little too literally. Officials at the Great Salt Lake State Park & Marina had to issue a strange yet necessary reminder: Don’t brine your Thanksgiving turkey in the Great Salt Lake.
The bizarre PSA came after an uncooked turkey washed ashore at Silver Sands Beach. Still wrapped in its original packaging, the bird bore the remains of a store label, clearly marking it as someone’s holiday centerpiece gone astray.
Park officials shared the cautionary tale on social media, explaining, “Not only is the salinity too high for a proper brine, but the waves can be very strong. There’s a good chance you could lose the entire turkey, as this person did.”
The Great Salt Lake, known for its extreme salinity levels, is a natural marvel, not a seasoning solution. While some might find the idea of an ultra-salty brine appealing, the reality is a lost turkey and an empty Thanksgiving table.
