“Everything But The Bagel” Seasoning Banned in South Korea Due to Poppy Seed Content
A favorite in kitchens across the U.S., Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel seasoning has found itself on the banned list in South Korea. The seasoning, beloved for its mix of sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and poppy seeds, is prohibited under South Korea’s strict narcotic laws because of its poppy seed content.
Recent reports from travelers arriving at Seoul’s Incheon Airport highlight warnings against bringing the seasoning into the country. One blogger shared their experience after attempting to bring 20 bottles of the seasoning from the U.S., only to have them confiscated by customs officials.
While poppy seeds themselves do not contain opiates, they remain banned in South Korea due to their association with substances like heroin. Experts note that it is virtually impossible to consume enough poppy seeds to induce any narcotic effects, but that hasn’t stopped South Korea and other countries like Singapore from enforcing strict regulations.
So, for anyone planning a trip to South Korea, it’s best to leave your Everything But The Bagel seasoning at home.
