EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. – The East Grand Forks council gave final approval Tuesday to a moratorium banning the sale of cannabis in the city.
Recreational marijuana will become legal in Minnesota on Aug. 1, but local governments can temporarily ban sales pending more guidance from the state – including location of retailers.
City Attorney Ron Galstad said there are more questions than answers right now.
“I’ve even called somebody I know in the AG’s office for clarification,” Galstad said. “Nobody, at this time, is giving any real answers because nobody really seems to know.”
Council member Tim Riopelle said other communities are dealing with the same issues.
Mayor Steve Gander described the moratorium as a “pause for clarity” from the state.
