MINNEAPOLIS – A committee of the Minneapolis City Council has approved an 8 percent jump in police supervisors’ pay, hoping to stem a leadership crisis.
City statistics show 460 employees have left the police department and only 127 replaced them, a net staff decrease of about 30 percent.
“The mayor often says we need to pay officers more and we need to fire them more,” Council member Elliot Payne said.
Some council members asked for more accountability and higher standards along with the pay increase, but none of them opposed the raises.
The full council will vote on the measure at their next meeting and it could take effect as soon as next month if the mayor signs it.
