ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – Attorney General Keith Ellison said Minnesota is joining the fight against illegal robocalls.
Ellison has joined a coalition of 48 states and the District of Columbia in filing a lawsuit against Michael D. Lansky, LLC, which does its business under the name Avid Telecom, its owner Michael Lansky, and its vice president Stacey S. Reeves for billions of alleged illegal robocalls to millions of people.
According to the lawsuit, Avid Telecom, a service provider that sells consumer data and phone numbers, violated numerous federal telemarketing and consumer laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Telemarketing Sales Rule, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the Telemarketing Sales Rule.
Ellison said from December 2018 to January 2023, Avid sent or attempted to send more than 24.5 billion calls. More than 90% of those calls lasted less than just 15 seconds, indicating that they were likely robocalls.
