FARGO (KFGO) – An officer-involved fatal shooting in Fargo continues to raise questions from the public and they want answers.
Fargo Police Advisory and Oversight Board member David Hogenson has recommended the city conduct an independent investigation into the shooting death of Shane Netterville in July.
“This is important,” Hogenson said. “Not necessarily to pursue another outcome, but to lift the cloud that hangs over you right now, to ensure fairness, to restore public confidence, and to make your department and this city better.”
Police chief Dave Zibolski reiterated the findings of the ruling of an internal investigation made in August that Officer Adam O’Brian’s shooting of Netterville was lawful.
“Having a tire of a vehicle pointed at you, and then accelerated, is an imminent threat,” Zibolski said. “Imminent meaning ‘immediately’ or ‘likely to happen.’ From that perspective, the officer has to make the decision to protect himself and use deadly force.”
City Attorney Nancy Morris said the motion could not be voted on during Thursday’s meeting because the request had not been put on the agenda. So, it will be taken up at the next board meeting.
If approved, it would then go to the city commission for a decision.
