St Paul – State regulators say Minnesota natural gas suppliers cannot pass through to customers about 60 million dollars in extra costs from when prices skyrocketed during a storm in early 2021, because utility companies should have made better business decisions. Despite that, about 600 million dollars in extra expenses will still appear on natural gas customers’ bills
Brian Edstrom with Citizens Utility Board says even though his advocacy group wanted less of the cost passed through to customers, Minnesota regulators still took “strong action”:
Edstrom said other state utility regulators that have dealt with these same issues connected to the same storm, have allowed utilities to recover the full amount of the costs they incurred during the storm from their customers.
The Public Utilities Commission ruling applies to Xcel Energy, CenterPoint, MERC, and Great Plains Natural Gas.
