MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Sheriff Mark Empting has announced that long-time Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist passed away peacefully early Friday morning with his family by his side. He was under hospice care. Empting says Bergquist was suffering from Alzheimers-Dementia.
In a statement, Bergquist’s family thanked the community for the support it has given Bergquist over his many years of service and asked for privacy.
Bergquist, 64, served as Clay County Sheriff from 2002-2019. Prior to his election as sheriff, he worked for the Dilworth and Moorhead Police Depts. He was also a firefighter in Dilworth for many years.
Bergquist’s wife, Annie, died in April. The couple has two grown children.
