Super long fingernails have had their moments throughout the years. They’re a major trend once again . . . and celebrities like Cardi B and Billie Eilish are onboard. But they can also be very UNHYGIENIC.
A biology professor at American University says that the area under the fingernail hosts a LOT of bacteria . . . and the longer the nail, the more surface area there is for microorganisms to settle in.
Studies have discovered 32 different bacteria and 28 different fungi underneath fingernails.
Interestingly enough, it doesn’t matter if the long nails are real or fake . . . and it doesn’t matter if they’re painted. The issue is that they’re an extension of your hands . . . and they’re very difficult to “decontaminate” with handwashing.
That said, the solution is NOT chewing your nails down to the nubs. The microorganisms live under shorter nails as well . . . and you can transmit that bacteria to your system by scratching, nail-biting, nose-picking, and finger-sucking.
