FARGO, N.D. – Day 1 at the 2021 NDHSAA Class A Girls Golf State Tournament is in the books and a familiar name is atop the individual leaderboard through 18 holes.
Three-time defending NDHSAA Class A girls golf individual medalist Hannah Herbel, a junior at Bismarck Century, shot an even-par 72 on Monday, October 4 at Edgewood Golf Course and leads by four strokes through Round 1 play.
Steady play was the name of the game for Herbel on Monday. A bogey on Hole 4 was cancelled out by a birdie on Hole 7. Later in the round, a birdie on Hole 15 put her 1-under, but a bogey on Hole 18 put her at even-par to end the round.
Wahpeton senior Anaka Lysne and Mandan sophomore Anna Huettl each shot 4-over 76s and sit tied for second place behind Herbel. Herbel will try for a historic fourth consecutive NDHSAA Class A girls golf medal on Tuesday. No Class A girls golfer has won more than three individual medals in a career. Emily St. Aubin, a former Class B prep golfer for South Border, is the only prep girls golfer in state history to win four individual state championships.
In the team standings, Fargo Davies leads after Round 1 shooting a total of 319 – four strokes better than Bismarck Century (323). The Eagles had three golfers – sophomore Lexi Bartley (77, tied fourth), senior Ava Olson (78, sixth) and eighth grader Rose Solberg (79, tied for seventh) finish in the Top 10 individually on Monday.
