GRAND FORKS – A memorial service was held Thurs. morning outside the Grand Forks Police Department to honor Officer Cody Holte who died in the line of duty a year ago.
Holte was killed in an exchange of gunfire in an apartment building.
Police Chief Mark Nelson says that day is burned into the minds of law enforcement and the community. “We witnessed the best and worst of what mankind has to offer one year ago, said Nelson. “The officers laid it all on the line to assist one another during a violent encounter,” added Nelson.
Nelson says it’s important to keep moving forward to honor Holte’s legacy while doing the job he loved. “Although the (badge) number #639 will never be used again, his legacy will live in our hearts and mind, Rest In Peace Cody we’ve got it from here,” said Nelson as he concluded his remarks.
A jury trial for the man arrested in the shooting, Salamah Pendleton, is scheduled to begin June 29.
A Grand Forks County deputy was shot in the leg and was off the job for about two months. Pendleton’s mother, who was in the apartment, also died of a gunshot wound.
