MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept in a doubleheader by No. 17 Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday, falling by scores of 2-0 and 9-1.
Junior Anna Lang pitched well in defeat for the Dragons. She allowed just five hits and two earned runs in seven innings, striking out three and walking two.
MSUM had four hits in the opener — singles by senior center fielder Elizabeth Johnson, junior left fielder Shay Weber, junior catcher Jordie McNeilly and freshman Miah Hartvigsen.
The Dragons threatened in the sixth, as McNeilly and Hartvigsen each singled with one out, but a pair of strikeouts followed to end the threat.
In Game 2, the Dragons outhit the Mavericks 4-3, but 12 walks and three errors proved costly.
Junior designated hitter Ally Helgoe was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Johnson, McNeilly and junior right fielder Jordey Smith added hits.
Helgoe’s RBI single in the second scored McNeilly with the Dragons’ run.
Freshman Reece Dahl took the loss, giving up nine runs, five earned, in 4.1 innings. She walked 12 and allowed only three hits. Sophomore Kiley Washnieski pitched 0.2 scoreless innings.
MSUM hosts Concordia-St. Paul for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The team’s two seniors, Johnson and third baseman Emma Dummer, will be honored before the games.
