FARGO (KFGO) – The Fargo City Commission has approved an interim policy change that will allow residents to place vegetable or flower gardens on the boulevard.
Commissioner Dave Piepkorn was the only no vote, saying it was “inappropriate” to allow gardens on the boulevards which are public property. He said he doesn’t believe it was thoroughly reviewed.
“Isn’t that great, it’s free, that’s frickin’ fantastic and it’s the public right-of-way, that’s public land, no that’s a big deal, you know what it is, it feels good, doesn’t it,” said Piepkorn. “You know what I was doing all weekend, planting my garden and I’m a gardener but this is rididulous.”
Piepkorn said it wasn’t a gardening emergency.
Commissioner Strand countered Piepkorn. “If you’re hungry it is, we have a lot of people unemployed, a lot of people in food lines, you’re aware of that aren’t you he asked Piepkorn. There are food lines and chickens are raised on farms right, ? Piepkorn repsonded.
The policy is effective immediately, through Sept. 30. Residents will need a permit before planting. There will be no fee.
