Interstate 29 reopens between Iowa, South Dakota

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (AP) - Interstate 29 between Iowa and South Dakota has reopened a day after a levee was built on top of it to protect nearby homes from high water.

National Guard soldiers and South Dakota Transportation workers dismantled the berm Friday and traffic started flowing again between Sioux City, Iowa, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, around 2:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service says the Big Sioux River where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet crested overnight at a level lower than expected.

The I-29 dike forced motorists onto detours. Floodwaters also blocked many other roads connecting South Dakota and Iowa between Sioux Falls and Sioux City.
