Hot British import
has come a long way in his career: he's featured on not one but three current hits, including the top 10 "Stay with Me," and his debut album
In the Lonely Hour
is expected to enter the charts in the top five next week. All this is an even bigger accomplishment than it sounds, considering what Sam was doing just two years ago.
"Two years ago I was working at a bar in London cleaning toilets. Life is very different," he revealed on ABC's The View Thursday.
Sam celebrated the release of In the Lonely Hour Tuesday night in New York City with a show at New York's legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. During the performance, he brought out Mary J. Blige , with whom he's recorded a duet version of "Stay with Me."
"I made the decision...to not mention that she was coming out [onstage]," he said of the performance. "So she just walked out and everyone was going crazy. She's the loveliest woman in the world, so it was so good."
Sam heads back to the U.K. this weekend to perform at a music festival at London's Wembley Stadium. He'll be back in the U.S. this fall for more tour dates.
