911 phone tax increase vote may be county wide

FARGO (KFGO-AM) - There's a good chance Cass County voters will vote on a fee hike to cover the cost of 9-1-1 emergency services.

Fargo city leaders discussed the possibility with county officials before Monday night's decision by city commissioners to ask Fargo voters to approve the increase in November's election.

County Auditor Mike Montplaisier says the county board thinks its "worth pursuing."

He says the county board will have to approve it quickly. The ballot measure has to be certified by 4 p.m. September 2 to get it on the fall ballot. That's the date of the next commission meeting.

If approved by voters, the one-dollar tax assessed to monthly phone bills would increase 50-cents effective January 1. The additonal revenue would solve a growing dispatch center deficit, estimated to be $630,000 by year's end
