5 Seconds of Summer has had to make a few adjustments to their act as they tour North America with One Direction . For starters, they’ve had to cut back on their cussing.
In an interview with Billboard , drummer Ashton Irwin says he and his band mates “do punk jumps and all that,” but they won’t use the F-word onstage. Guitarist and singer Luke Hemmings chimes in that at a typical 5 Seconds of Summer show, “we talk a lot of s***.”
Though they’re opening for 1D, the boys from Australia classify themselves as a punk act. Irwin says they're proud of the music they make, adding, "If anyone puts us down, we don’t care. Isn't that somewhat punk -- not giving a damn what people say?"
5 Seconds of Summer is hoping their songs will inspire a younger generation of rock bands. Irwin states, "If a kid picks up drumsticks because of our band, job done.” He then notes, "Just to have guitars on the radio again is nice."
Billboard ’s cover story on 5 Seconds of Summer appears in the issue hitting newsstands Monday. Earlier this week, the group announced they'll embark on a headlining tour of North America next summer.
